My building control story - Seb Jackson
Read Seb's journey as a trainee in building control, with the help of an LABC Bursary.
"When I left sixth form after my A levels I knew a 9 to 5 office job wasn’t for me. I was interested in non-office-based options like construction and after a little research I came across local authority building control.
"I saw a position advertised for a trainee building control surveyor. This sounded very much like something I could be interested in. I put in an application and was lucky enough to get the role. Soon after starting as a trainee I was enrolled for an HNC in Construction at Bradford College.
"Upon starting the course, my attitude and enthusiasm levels rose dramatically - I became more ambitious and driven as never before. Being able to apply what I was learning at college to my day-to-day duties as a trainee surveyor, along with gaining experience of applying theory-based learning out on site made my studies even more interesting. "I am proud to say that I have now graduated from my HNC Construction course and completed the first year of my Building Surveying degree at Sheffield Hallam which, through the bursary scheme, is another thing LABC has funded. As part of the bursary scheme, I was fortunate enough to attend two week-long Boot Camp training courses in Newport Pagnell, where I gained even more invaluable skills.
However, that wasn’t the only takeaway from these training courses; it was the knowledge that there are a lot of trainees doing the same thing that I am, an indication that the industry is constantly growing, that LABC is willing to invest in trainees and I networked with a lot of people from all over the country.
"As for hopes for the future; two of my colleagues at Calderdale have been named LABC Trainee of the Year, my hope is to achieve the same. From there, I will be working towards graduating from Sheffield Hallam and at the same time getting ever closer to becoming a fully qualified surveyor."
