Why not consider a career in building control with the opportunity to progress?
There has never been a better time to consider a career in building control. If you have an inquisitive mind, are interested in the built environment, like to understand how things are constructed, are a confident and effective communicator and are prepared to challenge and learn, then get in touch!
LABC is recruiting a nationwide network of building control surveyors with a clear progression pathway and learning and development programme. Government funding for the scheme means your learning and development will be fully subsidised and you will be paid a competitive salary while you study and progress.
A career pathway to progress into the building control profession
Many people have a career plan and like to see how their careers could progress and what they need to do to make it happen.
Building control is a specialist role requiring not only great interpersonal skills, but the technical ability to appraise drawings and specifications and understand how these are put into practice on site. Building control surveyors also work with first responders to make dynamic decisions when dealing with dangerous structures.
No one has the necessary skills from day one and it takes time to gain the skills, knowledge and experience to be able to competently deal with the full range of building work and other statutory functions undertaken by building control.
LABC has created a complete suite of accredited qualifications from a Level 3 Certificate in Technical Support for Public Service Building Standards through to a Level 6 Diploma in Fire Safety for Building Control – Complex Buildings. All of these are OFQUAL accredited.
Joining the LABC programme your specific development and learning will be supported while you undertake studies for the Level 4 and Level 5 Diplomas in Building Control.
This award winning educational programme provided by LABC is combined with experiential learning gained while being placed with a local authority building control team. This shadowing of building control professionals will give recruits the opportunity to see first-hand how the knowledge they gain is applied practically and regulatory requirements are complied with to make sure buildings are safe.
Once a trainee successfully completes each stage of learning and has gained sufficient experience, they can take the relevant validation assessment through the Building Safety Competence Foundation (BSCF) – details about BSCF and the validation process can be found here. Without this independent validation of competence surveyors cannot practice.
While recruits on this programme will be starting their career as a trainee building control surveyor, there will be lots of opportunities for progression once you have gained the relevant skills, knowledge, experience and passed the validation assessment(s).
Rest assured LABC will provide you with all the support and help we can as you progress through the programme.
After the two-year programme, trainees will be able to apply for roles within local authority building control teams – this could be as an assistant building control surveyor or higher, depending on how well you progress.
Within most local authorities there is a structure comprising trainee/assistant building control surveyors, building control surveyors, senior and/or principal building control surveyors and the building control manager. Surveyors can progress through the various levels as they gain more experience in dealing with more complex projects and pass the relevant validation assessment, so in truth, the sky is the limit – it’s all down to the individual!
