Pochard Fishing Lodge - an LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final winner
The project at Pochard Fishing Lodge, Great Brickhill, Milton Keynes was awarded the title of Best Small Commercial Project at the Grand Final of last year's LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.
A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.
Designed by Julian P King Architect and built by Chestnut Morgan with support from Aylesbury Vale District Council Building Control, Pochard Lodge is uniquely styled fishing lodge nestled within the trees that surround a picturesque lake just outside the village of Great Brickhill. The new Lodge, which replaces a 1960s timber lodge, overlaps the edge of the lake and has a glass, stone and red cedar clad facade under a slate roof. There is an impressive 180° view of the lake from the member’s room, which has a full height vaulted ceiling, giving a wonderful light and airy feel to the building. This facility has given the site a new lease of life, providing the members, local people and future visitors a truly wonderful experience of the lake.
The judges were impressed by this superb project that incorporated a good choice of materials and excellent attention to detail that is fitting for its fantastic location. Well organised and managed, the project was supported by a great relationship with the local authority building control team.
LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate innovation and good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”
Last year's Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 10 November 2017 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Conservative Member of Parliament. Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
