Heather Jones 2022 LABC president

LABC’s President for 2022 is Heather Jones, Head of 3C Building Control in Cambridgeshire. She formally took over from Anthony Oloyede, who ended his pandemic impacted two-year stint at the end of December.

At her first major presidential engagement – the LABC Building Excellence Awards on 28 January – she announced her presidential charity would be Young Minds – the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people's mental health.

With £3,500 being raised for the charity on the night Heather’s fundraising got off to a flying start.

Looking forward to her Presidential term, Heather said, “It’s a great privilege to serve as LABC President particularly at this time when the construction industry is changing. I’m delighted to be highlighting as President LABC’s new focus on standards, skills, and competence of the building control profession as we transition to the new building safety regime.”

Reflecting on her choice of charity, Heather said,

“Over the years family and friends have been affected by wellbeing issues so I chose Young Minds as they support young people’s mental health.

The country has experienced an unprecedented period with the pandemic and its impact will last for a long time. Now, more than ever, it is important to make sure our young people are equipped with the tools to help ensure their future well-being. Young Minds provides access to mental health support for young people and also helps empower adults to support and mentor young people.

I want to use my presidential year to show young people how vital they are for our future and enthuse them about a future as building control professionals.”

Young Minds estimate that in the UK today, five children in every classroom has a mental health problem. A quarter of 17-year-old girls have self-harmed in the last year while suicide remains the single biggest killer of boys and young men.

Heather’s just giving page for YoungMinds.
