Two LABC projects recognised at Construction Industry Council awards

5 Pancras Square and Penarth Learning Community were awarded winner and highly commended in the Inclusive Environment category at the recent Construction Industry Council awards.

The winner lies in the heart of the King's Cross Central transformation programme.

5 Pancras Square

5 Pancras Square (pictured left) is a 13-storey building providing expertly designed office and leisure facilities. It was created to provide inclusivity for all, and allows freedom of movement for everyone whilst avoiding unnecessary effort, separation or segregation.

Camden’s Building Control Access Officer was heavily involved in the building design and site inspection. Their seat on the King's Cross Access Forum ensured the wider inclusivity agenda of the whole King's Cross Central estate.

It is possible for wheelchair users to travel from any of the mainline or underground platforms in King's Cross and St Pancras stations to 5 Pancras Square entirely unassisted. The focus of the design has been on inclusion and independence, which is why it was the winner of the Inclusive Design category at the LABC Awards Grand Final in 2015.

Penarth Learning Community

Penarth Learning Community, highly commended at the CIC Awards, brought together the diverse learning environments for special education needs and mainstream secondary school learning, to create a high quality, contemporary educational environments that provides a wonderful opportunity for inclusivity and shared learning experiences.

This unique project, which has been a catalyst in the regeneration of Penarth, was a runner up in the LABC Awards Grand Final in 2015 after winning at the LABC Cymru Awards earlier in the same year.

Paul Everall, LABC’s Chief Executive said “I am delighted that two of our award winners have succeeded at the inaugural CIC Awards. We introduced the inclusive design category at the LABC awards in 2015 and it is fantastic to see so many projects are being developed with inclusiveness in mind.
