My story: Shaun Farman - Trainee of the Year

Blog Post
Shaun Farman Trainee of the Year 2015

Shaun Farman, Building Control Officer at Breckland Council, spoke to us about how LABC has helped ease his way to an exciting role in building control. From winning an LABC Bursary to being awarded LABC Trainee of the Year 2015, we're sure he has a wonderful future ahead of him in the industry. Here's his story:

Carving out a new career in building control

"When I left high school I went into the construction industry as an apprentice carpenter.

"I didn’t think that I would end up becoming a Building Control Surveyor and am very glad I got the opportunity as a trainee to get involved in this fulfilling profession.

"Two days are never the same - they're spent both in the office and on site, performing tasks like site inspections, plan checks and more.

"My team leader, Julie Brown-Rigby applied for the LABC Training Bursary for me as we felt that this kind of support would supplement my development and further my career in building control."

Practical training

"The LABC Bursary scheme allowed me to attend the LABC’s boot camp training programme. The programme consisted of structured workshops and lectures from guest speakers and industry professionals, who provided me with information and industry experience.

"The course allowed me to be able to meet other trainees from all over the country who were in the same situation as I was and share our experiences. Being new to the professional side of the construction industry, this course helped boost my confidence.

"It was fantastic to be awarded LABC’s Trainee of the Year 2015 and it really boosted my confidence. Since winning the award, I have been promoted to Building Control Officer and have become an accredited SAP assessor."
