The Monument Building wins at 2017 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final
The Monument Building in the City of London was awarded the title of Best Large Commercial Project at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.
A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.
This elegant building with its eight storey curtain of twisting aerofoil fins forms a respectful, yet dramatic backdrop to Sir Christopher Wren's Monument to the Great Fire of London. Skanska developed and constructed The Monument Building in the heart of the City of London. The ten storey building, designed by architect Ken Shuttleworth’s Make, has 8,000 square metres of office space. Four of the floors have terraces providing excellent views of the capital. There are an additional 370 square metres of retail space opposite the main entrance to Monument Underground Station on Fish Street Hill.
The building is designed to meet the BREEAM excellent environmental standard and has a green roof, solar panels and an intelligent lighting control system. Arup developed the fire safety strategy and obtained the approvals for the innovative solution in close liaison with the City of London District Surveyors and the London Fire Brigade. 4D BIM was employed to improve planning and installation efficiency whilst also helping to reduce wastage. The project achieved an Excellent rating under BREEAM New Construction 2011 and achieved Performance Beyond Compliance in the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
The winning project provided a dramatic solution in a challenging location taking the commercial office to a new level in the urban environment ensuring that compliance and design can go hand in hand.
Andreas Lindelof, Managing Director – Development at Skanska, said of the Monument project: “From conception our aim was to produce a development with an emphasis on creating the best working environment for tenants, in a location where businesses want to be. The end result is a highly sustainable building that provides a beautiful back drop to the nearby Monument.”
LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate innovation and good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”
The Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 10 November 2017 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Conservative Member of Parliament. Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
