Local Authority Building Control is updating its guidance and quality management processes to reflect new regulations affecting the demolition of pubs.

The regulations which came into effect in May 2017 remove 'permitted development' rights from building owners to demolish a pub building without seeking planning permission. Before the new rules came into force building owners could simply apply to their local council building control team for a demolition order without seeking planning permission first.

Since the new rules have come into force a number of cases have come to light where planning permission has not been sought.

LABC is now updating its quality management processes and issuing new advice to 3,500 public service surveying and technical staff to improve liaison with planning teams before demolition notices can be approved.

It's important that local building control teams realise there can be no half measures where pub demolitions are concerned.
LABC Deputy Managing Director, Lorna Stimpson

LABC Deputy MD Lorna says, "Pubs are an important part of the built environment and owners need to know they can no longer apply for demolition without seeking planning permission first. LABC is taking action to reinforce the new rules to make sure where pubs are being repurposed they have the proper protections in place.
