LABC Building Excellence Awards 2024 winner: Best Residential Conversion to a Single New Home

Press Release
The Molten Building North Shields

The LABC Grand Finals 2024 took place on Friday 24 January 2025, at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel. A celebration recognising excellent projects and individual contributions within the construction industry.

A panel of expert judges carefully reviewed a diverse range of exceptional projects, professionals, and teams, recognising their invaluable contributions to the industry.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards highlight the key role of public sector building control teams in ensuring the safety, quality, and sustainability of construction projects, showcasing the sector’s commitment to excellence and innovation.

LABC is delighted to announce that the WINNER of the Best Residential Conversion to a Single New Home is The Molten Building, Fish Quay.

The Molten Building, located at the mouth of the Tyne, facing towards the sea, features a large, single-storey B1 shell, which is exposed to the full range of weather conditions associated with this prominent location. The Fish Quay is the UK’s largest prawn port, and the building incorporates the remains of a Grade II Listed old guard house, situated at the corner of Clifford's Fort, an 18th-century structure designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Design adjustments, made in close collaboration with the building control team from North Tyneside Council allowed for the optimal use of limited space and site resources. This approach included an active strategy for reusing materials and gaining an early understanding of site challenges. The project also incorporated innovative processes and materials, ensuring that it not only met, but exceeded minimum standards.

Looking ahead, LABC remains committed to working together to uphold the highest standards of safety and quality in construction, continuing to drive progress and excellence across the sector.
