The LABC Awards return for the Northern Building Excellence Awards 2019

The LABC Northern Building Excellence Awards were held last Friday 5 July 2019 at The Hilton Hotel Newcastle Gateshead. The event attracted 300 guests from a range of industries across the three regions of Cumbria, Tees Valley and Tyne & Wear.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards celebrates buildings and design teams that have overcome the challenges of complex technical and construction issues as well as building site constraints. The awards also put the spotlight on innovative and creative building work that was completed in the Northern region.

Event highlights

Winning projects included Spanish City Dome in Whitley Bay, Middlesborough Town Hall and sports and events venue the Beacon of Light (pictured below) and across the board there were 16 winners and seven highly commended entries.

LABC Building Excellence Awards Northern 2019

The generous crowd managed to raise over £1,600 for We Build the Future, a charity chosen by LABC President Dave Sharp that helps support people in the construction and built environment sector dealing with cancer in their lives. The charity also funds research which can help accelerate improvements in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer.

The awards this year were presented by LABC's Head of Guidance David Ewing and musicians The Black Marcs provided the evening's entertainment.

"These awards are different. They aren’t about good looks or fancy design (although many winners incorporate both). They are about quality and standards. No other building awards look at how well buildings are put together from start to finish and the skills and competencies of those who design and construct them. We are very proud of everyone involved – they show the way ahead for the industry."
