Insulating concrete formwork

Insulating concrete formwork (ICF) is one of the modern methods of construction experiencing growth in the UK self-build sector. It’s an insulated in-situ concrete build system that can be quickly constructed and can offer levels of performance significantly better than that available from slower, more traditional approaches to building.

One such system is Surrey Homes Construction’s Velox ICF Construction System, which has LABC Registered details certification. This modular wall system is a non-load bearing permanent shuttering kit based on plates of thermal isolating material for the shuttering leaves and accessory parts. The accessory parts are spacers of steel, nails, and plates for end or bottom leaves. Internal widths range from 130mm – 280mm, with reinforced concrete placed in layers of 1m per hour within the formwork.

The kit is intended to be used for the construction of load-bearing (structural) or non-loadbearing (non-structural) internal and external walls above or below ground, including those which are subjected to fire regulations. While the system is suitable for use with external wall finishes, these are not part of the shuttering kit and are outside the scope of this registration. Details of the finish can be submitted separately and require approval to ensure compliance with particular notes taken of the exposure condition on site.

When using this type of construction below ground, waterproofing according to applicable national rules would be provided depending on whether ground water pressure is to be dealt with. The waterproofing would be protected from mechanical damage by a smash-resistant protective layer.

LABC Registered Details, now known as LABC Assured (as of March 2019), is a one-off certification process proving compliance with building regulations and standards across England, Wales & Scotland. Registering your product, system or house type with LABC increases industry confidence while also raising the profile of your company.
