Implementing Hackitt - another milestone for LABC

Our first wave of local authorities working to LABC’s new national standards, which are independently audited by UKAS accredited Alcumus ISOQAR, have all passed the ISO audit. This includes LABC's ‘head office’.

LABC had fantastic feedback from the auditors, including congratulations from Marvin Rotermund (pictured right, with LABC Managing Director Phil Hammond) who audited the LABC office in Vauxhall. He said the quality of the systems and the implementation by local authorities was “exceptionally good”.

Nicki Samme, Director of Alcumus ISOQAR said,”It has been inspiring to see the enthusiasm and engagement of all their teams – they are a leading example of how organisations should implement a quality management system.”

All this links to LABC’s work on building control competencies covered in the National Standard. We are implementing level 4, 5, and 6 qualifications tied to an Apprenticeship Standard for Building Control Surveyors. Plus LABC is currently validating our ‘higher risk residential building’ surveyors, supported by the Institution of Fire Engineers. 

Paul Everall, LABC Chief Executive, comments on LABC’s progress. “We had started work on our National Standards when the Audit Commission was disbanded. Fortunately, the quality system devised by Lorna Stimpson and her team exactly fits the recommendations of Dame Judith Hackitt in her Report.

"Using our externally audited system and with superb help and support from the Institution of Fire Engineers we will have identified and validated our base of surveyors and their competence using external supervision.

"LABC has its own 10 Point Implementation Plan LINK and I’m pleased with our rapid progress. We can reassure politicians, communities, customers, housing providers, developers and local authorities that we have a large and expanding proven resource of specialist surveyors. This is the resource that everyone needs and we can provide it with reassurance.

"Our next step – starting now – is to work with colleagues from the Fire Services to map our joint competencies and plan how we work together seamlessly on projects in the system that Dame Judith has recommended.”
