Hackitt implementation - further LABC comment

News
Building a safer future graphic

LABC is committed to working together with government and the whole construction industry for a new system that puts residents' safety at the heart of everything we do.

We welcome the government's announcement that it will adopt all Dame Judith Hackitt's recommendations. She was clear the whole system needed reform including consistent decision-making and regulation from a single authority.

But the minister went further with announcements clarifying the regulations, on non-combustible requirements and extensive reviews of the regulations and the Approved Documents which will support wholesale changes in design, specification, procurement, construction and enforcement.

We owe it to the 72 people who died at Grenfell and communities affected in a large number of public and private buildings to create the new system with new practices and culture. LABC's members are totally committed to this.

We welcome the exchange of ideas and we are happy to discuss the functioning of the new system with members of the JRG and the wide range of consultants and professionals who will be working with organisations going through the new process. We think it is vital that those committed to constructive dialogue and positive action can make a fast and practical start to implementing Dame Judith Hackitt's reforms in their totality.
