Get Britain Building New Homes

LABC is keen to support efforts to get Britain building more homes, a campaign spearheaded by the Good Homes Alliance. Increasing the housing stock across the country is key to meeting the rising demand for living space and the self-build sector has a vital role to play in this.

That’s why LABC is supporting the ten-point plan put forward by the Good Homes Alliance, which includes a ten-year plan to build three million new homes, create new towns and large settlements and encourage innovation, entrepreneurialism and enterprise.

LABC is already helping

Without the wide range of building regulations in existence, there’s no certainty that good homes could be delivered. However, regulations must be easier to work with and that’s why LABC is pushing to have all technical standards incorporated into the Building Regulations.

“This would have the advantage that people could be reasonably sure that, if they follow the Building Regulations, there would be no technical standards lurking around the corner of which they were not aware,” explains Paul Everall, chief executive of LABC.                                                                      

Without innovation and contemporary solutions, improving the quality and functionality of new homes would be difficult. Yet some insurers and warranty providers are happier dealing with traditional methodologies than with innovative solutions.

“At LABC we try to be as supportive as we can. We have our own LABC Warranty scheme and there have been examples where the warranty has been able to offer the flexibility to provide a warranty for innovative systems when others have been unwilling,” adds Paul.

“Thanks to innovation, coupled with regulation, homes are much better. Complaints about poor acoustic insulation were once common but then we came up with Robust Details and now it’s rarely an issue; thermal insulation levels have added to comfort and energy saving whilst access for disabled people has been greatly improved.”
