SCOSS alert: Structural Safety of Glass in Balustrades

News
Glass balustrade SCOSS alert

SCOSS (Standing Committee on Structural Safety) have issued an alert on the Structural Safety of Glass in Balustrades.

This followed an incident earlier in the year where a glass panel in a balustrade at a school in Manchester failed, allowing a pupil to fall through the exposed hole and sustain minor injuries.

They warn, "Balustrades and other barriers not designed and built to an appropriate standard pose a serious risk to safety".

SCOSS's alert should be read by building owners, contractors, architects, structural engineers, building surveyors, facilities managers, maintenance organisations and anyone specifying, procuring or maintaining barriers for use in and around buildings, as well as building control professionals.
