Insulated roof panel installation for energy efficient buildings

The drive towards more energy efficient buildings continues to bring innovative products onto the market, such as insulated roof panels. These are an easy-to-fit, quick-to-install, low-maintenance roofing option that also offers thermal performance. Long length panels also reduce the number of end laps and so reduce the potential leak locations.

Insulated panels are typically delivered in plastic wrapped packs, but they need careful handling. They shouldn’t be lifted by the female edge or just the top sheet as this is likely to cause damage and reduce the end lap seal effectiveness.

If the packs are going into storage, ensure the location is dry and protected from site operations. Store the panels at a slight slope to ensure any water drains. Do not store them for extended periods on site.

How to achieve the best result for energy efficient buildings

  • Check panels for damage before fixing and remove any excess insulation from side and end laps to ensure an adequate fit
  • Where panels have to be cut on site - use a powered reciprocating or circular saw, not an abrasive cutting wheel
  • Support the panel along the line of the cut and protect the pre-coated finish of the panel
  • Clean any debris from the pre-coated finish of the panel immediately and apply clear protective lacquer supplied by the manufacturer
  • Check all fixings are correctly fitted and tightened when all the panels have been installed
  • Ensure the fixings don’t distort the panels and minor scratches have been treated
  • Clean the surface of the roof to ensure it’s free of any debris
  • Remove any protective film once panels have been fixed - don’t leave the film in place as the adhesive is likely to leave a residue on the panels.

Read the guide to site installation of insulated roof panels from the Metal Cladding and Roofing Manufacturers Association (MCRMA) for more details on how to get the job right. Remember, manufacturers are best placed to offer advice about their particular products so do follow their instructions.
