Hemp House wins at 2017 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final

The Hemp House project at Water Lane, Bassingham, Lincolnshire was awarded the title of Best Individual New House at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.

Aspirations for this self-build detached house included a desire for a home that was as environmentally friendly through its construction as possible, resulting in a breathable, healthy house that would require the minimum of energy to run and maintain. Designed by Stephen George & Partners LLP, Hemp House has used sustainable materials, locally produced where possible, which have achieved high levels of energy efficiency and produced beautiful home that will be robust and easy to maintain. Hemp House is a well-insulated, warm and comfortable home with the bonus of low ongoing running costs.

The judges were full of praise for this new home which is a net exporter of energy whilst managing to sit well in its setting and deliver on comfort and looks. This was a project-managed self-build with excellent collaboration and a strong story of locally sourced materials, delivering an exemplary home for the 21st century.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “Our building excellence awards are an opportunity to celebrate innovation and good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”

The Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 10 November 2017 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Conservative Member of Parliament.  Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
