Complete foundation system
Insulslab is a complete cast in situ system, based on a foundation which comprises a series of interlocking expanded polystyrene pods forming a substantially rigid ‘waffle’-shaped slab. Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is poured over the top to form the finished foundation.
General arrangement drawings for each project, i.e. layout for the foundations, are designed by Insulslab structural engineers. Their consultants also provide a plot-specific engineered solution in order to minimise risk, whilst maximising any potential savings.
While the dimensions of the standard pods are generally 1200 X 1200mm X 350mm deep, quarter, half and three-quarter size pods are also available to cater for most layouts with minimal cutting. The pods are also designed to interlock to maintain the correct rib width and minimise the risk of movement during the installation process. In addition to the pods, 100 mm and 50 mm thick slabs of EPS150 and EPS70 are used as under-beam and edge insulation respectively.
When correctly specified and constructed, the Insulslab system complies with Part L of the Building Regulations, providing typical U-values of around 0.10 – 0.13W/m2K, and allowing greater flexibility within the overall design of the thermal envelope.
