Spindrift View - LABC winner

Spindrift View, constructed by Ease Manage and designed by Harrison Sutton Partnership was awarded the title of Best Individual New Home at the LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Finals – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a shortlist of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.

The project involved the construction of a large and luxurious house, ‘embedded’ on the cliff edge overlooking Salcombe estuary with extremely difficult access, carefully and finely detailed, and yet robust enough to stand up to the severity of a marine environment.

This stunning new home was delivered though the dedicated efforts of the consultant and construction team with numerous obstacles including piling, rock anchoring, boundary stability, main sewer diversion, cliff edge stabilisation, public highway support and access pivotal in the project.

The architects said “It is difficult to comprehend how much of this complexity was apparent at the production drawing stage, and just how much could be understood by Devon Building Control Partnership during the plans checking stage.

"The realisation from plans to build form is a testament to the collaborative nature of the project that has resulted in this amazing house being delivered."

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: "Our Building Excellence Awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings.

"Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry."

The panel of expert judges said "This Salcombe project was a tour de force because of the extremely challenging cliff edge site and tortuous access.

"Through good design and a collaborative approach to the challenges of the build, the house delivers top quality amenities along with good sustainability whilst stylistically achieving a good marriage of contemporary style with a form which sits entirely comfortably in its context."

The LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Finals took place on Friday 9 November 2018 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Dead Ringers star, comedian and impressionist Jon Culshaw.

Over 860 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
