Press Release
Protheroe House, Tottenham, London wins at 2017 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final

The project at Protheroe House, Tottenham, London was awarded the title of Best Inclusive Building at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.

Designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects and built by Galliford Try for One Housing Group, this project which replaces a 1960's sheltered housing scheme provides 50 bright and modern homes. The horseshoe design building features tiered roofs on first to fourth floors with balconies and extensive terrace space and curtain walling and glass to each level. This is complemented by spacious common areas and facilities, including a restaurant, a bar, lounges, and landscaped gardens. There is also a licenced café, The Larder @ Tottenham, open to residents and the public. The project embraces the concept of extra care which enables the residents to live completely independently, with high quality onsite care and support available if needed.

Galliford Try Partnerships was one of a small number of leading contractors invited to pilot the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s (CCS) Ultra Site initiative at Protheroe House – the ultimate commitment to considerate construction.

The judges felt that this scheme demonstrated how it went above and beyond basic levels of accessibility, emphasising the importance of pre-application discussions and a good relationship with the neighbouring community.  Elements such as the café bring local residents and members of the public into the development creating an inclusive facility and strong links into the existing environment. The development provides a modern take on specialist housing - with an emphasis on independence, benefitting from extremely positive end-user feedback and has made a meaningful difference to people’s lives in Haringey.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate innovation and good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”

The Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 10 November 2017 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Conservative Member of Parliament.  Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
