Event highlights

Awards were presented by Matthew Hoggard CBE, former England and Leicestershire County cricketer and on the night there were 15 winners and five high commendations – see all of the award-winners here. Winning projects included Wyndham Lodge in Melton Mowbray, the Cripps Health Centre at the University of Nottingham and the RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, Nottinghamshire (Best Small Commercial Project, pictured below).

More than £3,500 was raised for LABC President Dave Sharp's charity of the year We Build the Future. The charity is committed to supporting people who work in the construction and built environment sector and face the challenge of dealing with cancer in their lives.

"These awards are different. They aren’t about good looks or fancy design (although many winners incorporate both). They are about quality and standards. No other building awards look at how well buildings are put together from start to finish and the skills and competencies of those who design and construct them. We are very proud of everyone involved – they show the way ahead for the industry."
Paul Everall CBE, Chief Executive at LABC

Mercia Maria piazza

Can not believe our entry was beaten by a travel lodge ! it had to be least appealing or difficult looking building to achieve, On view we all put it to the bottom of the list of winners...perhaps we did not sell ourselves properly ?

My thoughts was cast back on the fact that we had won this category before and the national awards inc the chairman’s on a similar build four years previously, This building from a site managers prospective, was twice as hard to build and finished to much higher standard than the last, the roof alone was a work of art using an array of traditional skills craftsman.
I very much doubt the travel lodge winner had the workmanship put into its building or the degree of thought needed Needed to achieve the piazza building.
It might sound like sour grapes, Id say its made a mockery of the awards when a local land mark building gets beat by a plain looking rectangular travel lodge... !
