LABC Building Excellence Awards 2023 winner: Best Residential Conversion to a Single New Home

Press Release
Black Pheasant Barn Suffolk

More than 900 leading construction industry figures attended the LABC Building Excellence Awards at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London to celebrate best practice, quality, and exemplary standards in construction.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards focus on professional skills and competence, as well as exemplar projects with categories for ‘People’ and ‘Places.’

A panel of industry experts judged a selection of the highest quality projects, professionals, and teams from around England and Wales to showcase solutions to complex technical or construction issues, site constraints and technical innovation. The awards highlight the vital contribution public sector building control teams make as part of the project team, ensuring safe, sustainable, and high-quality construction projects.

LABC is delighted to announce that the WINNER of the Best Residential Conversion to a Single New Home is Black Pheasant Barn, Suffolk.

Based in the market town of Sudbury, Black Pheasant Barn is an impressive, modern and environmentally conscious Class Q barn conversion delivered on a tight budget, and under tight timelines. In terms of conservation, this project is an excellent example of what can be achieved when maintaining the fabric of a disused agricultural building.

The LABC public service building control team from Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Councils have demonstrated their helpful and responsive attitude during the duration of the project, as well as great communication between the different inspectors who were knowledgeable and aware of the complexities on a project of this kind. Despite the rapidly changing financial and economic landscape, the team were able to accommodate fast turn arounds on inspections which in turn significantly aided the client in financing the project and sticking to tight deadlines.

Congratulating the whole team on their success, Lorna Stimpson, LABC Chief Executive said:

"I firmly believe that one of the best ways to see more good work is to praise building excellence and publicly acknowledge companies, designers, site managers and tradespeople who go that extra mile."
