Joe Murphy, Kier Construction Southern wins at 2018 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final

Joe Murphy from Kier Construction Southern was awarded the title of LABC Non-Residential Construction Professional of the Year at the Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar. He was nominated by the local authority building control team from the London Borough of Harrow.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects and professionals from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.

As a Construction Manager for Kier Construction Southern, Joe is responsible for the delivery of education schemes including the development of a range of new-build projects including very large secondary schools and more modestly sized infant schools.

Joe has brought together a dedicated team of Design Managers supported by experienced architects, structural engineers and fire engineers to ensure that from inception to completion, compliance with the Building Regulations is fully achieved whilst meeting the clients brief, fostering an open and transparent dialogue with Building Control.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: "It is always a pleasure to recognise individuals that go the extra mile as part of their role.

The panel of expert judges said "The judges immediately recognized Joe’s positive outlook in his work and any problems he encounters he views as a challenge.

"His enthusiasm for the job is infectious and he takes great pride in his work both on a personal level and corporately. His staff love working with him as on Fridays he buys them pizza and chips!!"

Jim King, Team Leader for the Building Control team at the London Borough of Harrow, and President of the LDSA, said "Joe's professionalism has been instrumental in ensuring a number of projects have crossed the line on time and budget. He is respected by his workforce which means he is supported by a professional and dedicated team."

The Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 9 November 2018 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Dead Ringers star, comedian and impressionist Jon Culshaw.

860 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.

About the LABC Building Excellence Awards

The LABC Building Excellence Awards showcase buildings and design teams that have had to tussle with complex technical or construction issues and building site constraints. 

They highlight innovative and creative solutions and building control professionalism that leads to safe, sustainable and high quality construction projects.
