Half point: My Consortium of European Building Control tenure
I was delighted to be appointed vice president of the Consortium of European Building Control (CEBC) in the autumn of 2012. The consortium exists to provide a forum for bodies which either make building regulations in European countries or are responsible for enforcing them. It has some 30 members from 22 different countries, and usually holds two major meetings each year. When I was a civil servant, I represented the UK Government at CEBC, and when LABC was formed in 2005 it too became a member.
Since I became vice president 18 months ago, I have been heavily involved in preparing the agenda and programme for three meetings, held in London, Jerusalem and most recently Frankfurt, and in chairing sessions at these meetings. I have also represented CEBC at a number of meetings in Brussels organised by the European Commission to develop a strategy for sustainable competitiveness in the construction industry in the years to 2020. I was also the lead author for the report on building control systems in Europe Value of Building Control Report in October 2012.
I look forward to the remaining 18 months of my period of office, with the next two meetings being planned to be held in Turkey and Iceland.
